Happy Birthday, Greta Garbo (September 18, 1905 - April 15, 1990)

The story of my life is about back entrances, side doors, secret elevators, and other ways of getting in and out of places so that people won’t bother me.

Greta Garbo’s first American film was Monta Bell’s The Torrent, in which she played a Spanish girl who goes off to become an opera singer because her small-town sweetheart (Ricardo Cortez) will not marry her. Both cast and crew tried to stifle laughs when Garbo acted this scene.  She was supposed to be singing a languid love song but the only one she knew in English was the bouncy show tune ‘I Want to Be Happy.’ She crooned it slowly and sadly: ‘I want to be happy/But I won’t be happy/Til I make you happy, too.’ After a few torturous minutes Bell yelled ‘Cut’ and the set exploded with laughter.
